gypsy blood

i'm watching the leaves fall today, like gold glitter in a water globe. most swirl downward, but i saw one that was caught by the wind and i swear it was pulled higher than the tree that it came from. have i mentioned before that this is my very, very favorite time of year??? alas, no camera with me today, but i wouldn't be able to do those leaves justice anyway.

speaking of fall, i have an old, old copy of Bartlett's Quotations that belonged to my great great Aunt Leaflet. a couple of years ago, in October no less, i happened upon that book on my bookshelf and i pulled it down to look through it. an old envelope fell out the instant i opened the book, and on it was scrawled this stanza from "Vagabond" by Bliss Carman:

"There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir;

We must rise and follow her,

When from every hill of flame

She calls and calls each vagabond by name."

amazing, isn't it? and exactly how i feel. every October. (google it, the whole poem is quite awesome!)

also loving right now:

vintage cologne bottles, those metal labels for old liquor decanters, oxidized silver chains, rhinestone costume jewelry, earthy linen, jadite, buttons, organic potatoes, and hot cider with cinnamon sticks.

what about you? what stirs your gypsy blood on this lovely October day?

It's a cold, damp day here today so what would stir my gypsy blood right now would be a large chai tea latte!! I would also love to in my sweats wrapped up in a blanket watching a favorite old movie but alas, I must work :-)
Thanks for visiting today.

I watched "Shadow of the Vampyre" last night curled up in bed with a glass of pinot noir and that felt like Autumn had, indeed, arrived somehow. Love this excerpt you shared. Enjoy those gold leaves. ~h

I love crisp fall air, brightly colored leaves, new fall clothes, and apple pie.

Ah what a lovely treasure to find in a book! I love the stanza, it is very bewitching.

Let's see besides loving the wonderful leaves, the stormy weather, apples and hot cocoa. I've been into bold colored blazers that look good for everything, old suitcases, and owl everything. ^^

Ha! I love that you have organic potatoes on your list...you're a girl after my own heart (I swore off "regular" potatoes years ago)! :) I love that name - Aunt Leaflet...it just sounds so cool! And I definitely like the poem too!!

What a great quote - I love it. And that you would find it in a book that belonged to your great great Aunt Leaflet...and that those words were probably written down by her... How perfectly special. I loved reading this post - thank you.

Gypsy blood... I know it so well; it makes me restless and yearn for change...

Wow, that's an awesome poem, thanks for posting it! Every fall I feel that 'gypsy blood' call, that nostalgia flowing through my blood. There is something about the crispness, and sharp sky colors, and honey golden leaves, that just almost hurts my soul with its tenderness. Thanks for posting that poem, went right to my heart :)
